Kasautii Zindagii Kay (transl.Trials of Life) is an Indian romantic drama television series produced by Ekta Kapoor under Balaji Telefilms.^[2] It premiered on 25 September 2018 on Star Plus.^[3] It stars Parth Samthaan, Erica Fernandes, Hina Khan, Karan Singh Grover and Aamna Sharif.

Plot[edit]

Anurag Basu and Prerna Sharma are two individuals meant to fall in love yet forced to go through several trials of life to be together.

Anurag and Prerna study in the same university. With time, they start conversing and slowly form a bond of trust and friendship. Slowly, Prerna realises that she has fallen in love with Anurag.

Amidst this, Komolika Chaubey makes her entry. She is arrogant and attracts male attention wherever she goes, constantly misusing her dad's political power to get what she wants. Eventually, Anurag realises his love for Prerna. Meanwhile, Komolika starts getting interested in Anurag.

Anurag and Prerna confess their feelings to each other. They perform a marriage ritual, promising to marry each other and consummate their relationship. Seeing Prerna and Anurag plan a future together, Komolika decides to create misunderstandings between them. She asks Anurag to marry her in order to save Prerna's house. Compelled, Anurag agrees. Prerna is left shocked. She gets hit by a car and is taken to the hospital where the doctor reveals that she is pregnant.

Rebellious, Prerna enters the Basu house claiming to be Anurag's wife. Prerna successfully exposes Komolika and gets her arrested. Komolika escapes and comes back to kill Prerna but instead falls down from the terrace and goes missing. Prerna and Anurag reunite and get engaged.

Meanwhile, Rishabh Bajaj, a ruthless businessman who enjoys destroying and taking over businesses enters. He falsely frames Anurag and gets him jailed. Further, Rishabh asks Prerna to marry him in exchange of Anurag's freedom. Helpless, Prerna decides to marry Rishabh to save Anurag and his family. Anurag is freed and Prerna marries Rishabh. Heartbroken and devastated, Anurag questions Prerna but she lies to him hoping he moves on from her.

Production[edit]

Kasautii Zindagii Kay is a reboot of the 2000 series of the same name, which also was produced by Ekta Kapoor under Balaji Telefilms for Star Plus.^[4]

I had a few personality traits in mind for Anurag and Prerna. Anurag had to be the kind of man who doesn't scream to get noticed, but once you notice him, he's unforgettable. For me, Parth was an obvious choice because he has unbelievable eyes. I have not seen a man whose eyes reflect that depth even in photographs. Prerna is someone who comes across as light-hearted, but has a lot of depth. When I saw the promo of Erica's show, Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi, I knew I wanted to cast her.

Casting[edit]

In September 2018, Shah Rukh Khan introduced Parth Samthaan and Erica Fernandes as Anurag Basu and Prerna Sharma.^[6] In October 2018, Hina Khan was introduced as Komolika Chaubey.^[7] In June 2019, Karan Singh Grover was introduced as Rishabh Bajaj.^[8] In September 2019, Hina Khan confirmed quiting the show and was replaced by Aamna Sharif as Komolika Chaubey in October 2019.^[9]

Filming[edit]

Kasautii is mainly filmed in Mumbai but a few scenes were shot in Kolkata as the show's storyline is based in West Bengal.^[10] Furthermore, the Switzerland track was shot in Zurich.^[11]

Critical response[edit]

Shweta Kesari from India Today said, 'Parth Samthaan and Erica Fernandes beautifully fit into the shoes of punctual Anurag and carefree Prerna. The grandeur and magnificence of the show will make your jaw drop. The makers have tried to retain the essence of Kolkata and Bengalis. Overall the show is a complete package of entertainment for soap viewers!'^[12]

Soumya Srivastava from Hindustan Times described the show as 'louder and garnish' and said, 'The background score is excessive. It plays without reason and way too often. Whether the scene demands it or not, a joyful, somber or a comical tone is always there to force your brain into thinking that this is how you are supposed to feel right now.'^[13]

Times Now commented that, 'The reboot takes you in the lives of Anurag and Prerna that were part of our every day lives and the first episode is all about nostalgia of the epic Kasautii Zindagii Kay.'^[14]
